Most news stories about reenactors of any flavor are just thinly veiled excuses to mock the people whose passion drives them to the hobby. This story is slightly less mocking than most, although some of the quotes sound more like what a reporter thinks he should be hearing than anything like what I have ever heard a reenactor say. Still this story is a better attempt than many to get at why the reenactors do what they do.

Reenactor “Hit By Cannon”
A rare reenactor injury at a parade in Norwood Massachusetts when hit by a piece of metal fired from a cannon. From the sound of it a bit of a cannon broke apart when fired and hit a man portraying a German WW2 soldier. Reenacting is a pretty safe hobby, great care is taken as pointing guns and cannons at people requires a very safety minded focus for the hobby to function at all, most injuries I saw were from twisted ankles or minor burns from cooking, but even in a safe hobby things can go wrong.
Reenactors and Reenacting
Here are a couple of stories about reenactors and reenacting. First up is a Telegraph story which is pulled from a book by a travel writer about reenactors.
A Catch Up Post, Squirrel Lite
First up, Wal-Mart has decided to turn off its DRM servers and screw its customers who bought from them. Just like Microsoft did and Yahoo did before them. Tell us again about how DRM is the safe way to buy.
Next up is the great hobby of reenacting. Rule one, only reenact with people who won’t really shoot you. I always thought this was an important rule.
Lastly we have my beloved Orioles who are coming off a truly dreadful season without prospects for much better anytime real soon. In many ways it was a typical season for them, an early hot streak to get the fans excited followed by a complete fade post All Star Game but this year was made worse for me by Tampa Bay doing great and a comment as the fade started by Brian Roberts along the lines of ‘We can’t play every game like a playoff game.’ This is certainly true, baseball’s long season is a marathon not a sprint, however that mindset spoken out loud gave me the impression that nobody was ever playing any game like it was for real so I stopped watching. Worst season for me as a fan ever. Anyhow, the Sun grades the players here, I am harder in my grading on the veterans than they are as I feel a lax attitude from them this year has hurt the many young players the O’s brought up and will slow them down even if they improve.
Edit: Just had to add that Wondermark today sums up my view on the rush to a financial ‘solution’ that the usual idiots are pushing.
A Quick Two-Fer
A good article about a reenactment of the charge of the Australian Light Horse Regiment in World War One. Often called the last cavalry charge, it wasn’t, but it was still a heck of feat in an age of warfare dominated by quick firing rifles and machine guns. Good movie too.
Today’s Buttersafe is brilliant and points out why my plots so frequently fail.
Jouster Killed During TV Filming In The UK
I missed this story somehow, a jouster was killed in the UK during the filming of the Time Team TV show. The show was a family favorite when we lived in the UK and used reenactors extensively but this is the first time I have ever heard of this severe an accident involving a reenactment in a long time.
