With great pain I acknowledge the Yankees are no longer in the basement of the American League East, the Baltimore Orioles have taken their place. It was nice while it lasted.
If you note a downward line in my Baltimore standings postings it just means that the season is almost a week old. Still, tied with the Yankees….
I know very well this is petty, being an Orioles fan means enjoying it while you can. They really got pasted last night by Boston.
January 3rd: Today in 1920 the legendary and now thought to be defeated ‘Curse of the Bambino‘ begins for the Boston Red Sox as they trade Babe Ruth to the Yankees. I would of course be happy if both the Sox and Yankees were to claim a new curse, the ‘Curse of the Super Spenders’ but that is mainly because the Orioles can’t play that game anymore…
September 6th: Today in 1995 Cal Ripken broke Lou Gerhig’s consecutive games played record. I was at the game and remember it as one of the most enjoyable evenings in my life, which is very odd considering I have never met Cal Ripken in person, but being a sports fan is odd. This was about three years before the Orioles decided that their only goal was to stay ahead of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays every year rather than try to compete with the Yankees and Red Sox. They do ok at staying ahead of the Devil Rays, but I keep hoping that someday they will decide to compete again.
